Sara Jane Harper
I work intuitively, my inspiration is derived from many sources and I have a vocabulary of marks, signs and symbols that has developed over the years. Remembering, reinventing and reconstructing are elements that feature in my work and I am interested in the accidental and unintentional aspects that emerge from the creative activity.
I enjoy using a variety of different materials and my method of working involves the manipulation of materials and images. I am concerned with the doing and the making, a journey of discovery, where the end product is not the principal focus.
My pots are another vehicle for expression. I like to use a semi porcelain clay for the pinch pots, I decorate them with underglazes and they are finished with a translucent glaze. My ceramics enable me to make work that is accessible and affordable, over the years I have produced thousands of pots and they are spread far and wide. I completed my Masters degree at Reading University in 1987 and have continued to produce my artwork and pottery. Alongside my own art practice I have worked as a scenic artist and have run art workshops and projects for children and community groups. I was the Wrexham Co-ordinator for Helfa Gelf an Open Studios initiative that included all the counties of North Wales and I have a permanent studio in North Wales. I live and work in New Radnor.
