Hoppo - Charlie Hopkinson
Self taught, Hoppo began painting and exhibiting in the late 1980s, but during a lull, he picked up a camera and subsequently became a photographer for the following thirty years. Illness in 2016 forced him to pack the cameras away, and now, fully recovered, he has returned to full time painting, basing himself in the Welsh countryside.
Most of his work is abstract or semi abstract, and painted onto square canvasses. Both pink and red appear to dominate, though he says that yellow is his favourite colour.
Other than insisting that his sub conscious is the engine that drives his painting, Hoppo believes that resonance is the connection that binds the viewer to his work. He says, ‘…if and when a picture resonates with the viewer, then an indelible link is created between the two…’
