Michael Capstick
Most people have a change of career at some stage in their lives. Mine came after 20 years. Starting off specialising in poultry at agricultural college (a much different regime in those days). My first 20 years were spent breeding laying hens and latterly turkeys. Following a change of policy by my employer I was forced to make a decision, either stay and follow a path that didn’t suit me or take the money and run. I did the latter.
Everyone thought I was crazy starting a picture framing business in Mid Wales without any experience.
At first I was framing prints for sale at shows and craft fairs but gradually bespoke framing started to take over. I was lucky to be spotted by Liz Organ who ran the wonderful Kilvert Gallery in Clyro at the time. She took me under her wing and sent a lot of artists my way. Some stayed with me until I retired in 2020 and also became friends.
After nearly 30 exciting and busy years I was realising that it was time to think about the future when out of the blue an offer came to sell the business.
I wanted to surprise Sylvia with a picture I’d painted and my friend and mentor helped me along the way and a still life of ballet shoes emerged. And that is that as they say. Here we go again. Career number 3.
Exhibitions so far : The Hub, New Radnor 2021. H’art at the Hymns, 2022, Radnorshire Artists at The Hymns 2023
