Laura Rowlatt
I am a painter turned basketmaker.
I trained as a textile designer and have always been fascinated by the structure and construction of fabric, which led me quite naturally to explore basketmaking. Over the past 12 years I have been gradually building up my knowledge of basketmaking techniques, and learning new skills from masters of our craft. I live and work in Lyonshall, where I also grow much of the willow I use; other materials are foraged from the neighbouring woods.
I love working with willow, to create functional baskets of all shapes and sizes. It is thrilling to start with a bundle of straight sticks and transform it into the basket I've seen in my mind's eye. It doesn't always happen, but mostly it does.
